In German, similar to English we have Definite and Indefinite articles. But unlike English, these articles change form depending on the gender and also case (as we saw in The 4 cases in German).

Definite Article

We use a definite article when we are addressing a specific noun, when there is only one of that kind, when referring to an object already mentioned. In German, the definite article can be in follwing forms depending on gender and the case in which the noun is used.

Gender Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative
Masculine der des dem den
Feminine die der der die
Neuter das des dem das
Plural die der den die

Indefinite Article

In German, unlike English having 2 indefinite articles ‘a’ and ‘an’, we have only one article but in different forms. We use indefinite article when we are referring to one of a particular kind.

Gender Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative
Masculine ein eines einem einen
Feminine eine einer einer eine
Neuter ein eines einem ein

Note

Almost everyone advises to learn nouns along with their ‘The’ article, so that it becomes easier to remember the gender as well
